About us
Born from shark science in La Paz
Shark Encounters Mexico is a Destination Management Company — experts in logistics, tourist services and expeditions in Baja, Mexico.
We started in La Paz as a citizen science program founded by a shark-specialist marine biologist, to combine ecotourism with shark research, support local fishermen and promote conservation.
Today we design customized expeditions guided by marine biologists — from Guadalupe Island to the Revillagigedo Archipelago, the Mexican Pacific and the Gulf of California — and arrange whatever logistics you need by land, air or sea.
Research & partners
We dive with sharks — and study them to protect them.
Our main research focuses on the scalloped hammerhead shark, one of the most vulnerable species. We study the movement and connectivity between adult aggregation sites and the nursery areas of neonates and juveniles in Mexico and the Eastern Tropical Pacific.
Using satellite telemetry and genetic tools — mitochondrial DNA, microsatellites and SNPs — with tagging and biopsies of adults, neonates and juveniles, it is the first study to link movement and genetic flow across these life stages in the ETP. The study is currently underway.
